Serving the Educational needs of Jewish children with special needs

SEGULA is pleased to announce the honorees of the
Avodat HaKodesh Award
are
Rabbi and Mrs. Melvin and Malka Granatstein
for the leadership in community service.

Rabbi Melvin Granastein & Malka Granatstein are natives of Toronto, Canada. Malka Granatstein entered the University of Toronto with the academic award of Ontario Scholar where she received her B.A. degree. Rabbi Granatstein was educated at Yeshiva University where he received his B.A., M.A., and Rabbinic ordination and was a Mendel Gottesman Fellow in Talmud. The Grantasteins have served our community for 29 years. Since 1974 Rabbi Granatstein has ministered to the Green Road Synagogue and under his leadership the synagogue has become the premier congregational voice of Religious Zionism and Orthodoxy. Rabbi Granatstein is a community chaplain, a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council and on the board of the Middle East Forum. He has published numerous scholarly and popular articles, taught at the College of Jewish Studies, and conducts numerous classes in Jewish text study. He directed the Va'ad HaChinuch of the Fuchs Mizrachi School in the formulation of an innovative Torah U'Madda curriculum.

Malka has been an active worker for the Green Road Synagogue, a member of Amit Women, has volunteered at the Fuchs Mizrachi School, the Bikur Cholim Society and with Israeli-oriented programs. She is presently a placement specialist at the Resettlement Office of Jewish Family Service.

The Granatsteins have four children. Hedva and Miriam live with their families in Israel. Hadassa and family reside here in Cleveland where Hadassa works as Judaics Coordinator for SEGULA. Dov lives at the Ruach Consortion Home which the Granatsteins established with three other families. The four special-needs residents of the home are integrated into the Orthodox community. They regularly attend Shabbat services at Green Road Synagogue accompanied by Yachad volunteers who often join them for Shabbat meals at Ruach House and visit with them. Shabbat at Ruach House ends with Rabbi Granatstein making Havdallah there.
