SEGULA is pleased to announce the
honorees of the Avodat HaKodesh Award are Rabbi and Mrs.
Melvin and Malka Granatstein for the leadership in community service.

| Rabbi Melvin Granastein &
Malka Granatstein are natives of Toronto, Canada. Malka Granatstein entered the
University of Toronto with the academic award of Ontario Scholar where she
received her B.A. degree. Rabbi Granatstein was educated at Yeshiva University
where he received his B.A., M.A., and Rabbinic ordination and was a Mendel
Gottesman Fellow in Talmud. The Grantasteins have served our community for 29
years. Since 1974 Rabbi Granatstein has ministered to the Green Road Synagogue
and under his leadership the synagogue has become the premier congregational
voice of Religious Zionism and Orthodoxy. Rabbi Granatstein is a community
chaplain, a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council and on the board
of the Middle East Forum. He has published numerous scholarly and popular
articles, taught at the College of Jewish Studies, and conducts numerous
classes in Jewish text study. He directed the Va'ad HaChinuch of the Fuchs
Mizrachi School in the formulation of an innovative Torah U'Madda
curriculum. |

| Malka has been an active
worker for the Green Road Synagogue, a member of Amit Women, has volunteered at
the Fuchs Mizrachi School, the Bikur Cholim Society and with Israeli-oriented
programs. She is presently a placement specialist at the Resettlement Office of
Jewish Family Service. |

| The Granatsteins have four
children. Hedva and Miriam live with their families in Israel. Hadassa and
family reside here in Cleveland where Hadassa works as Judaics Coordinator for
SEGULA. Dov lives at the Ruach Consortion Home which the Granatsteins
established with three other families. The four special-needs residents of the
home are integrated into the Orthodox community. They regularly attend Shabbat
services at Green Road Synagogue accompanied by Yachad volunteers who often
join them for Shabbat meals at Ruach House and visit with them. Shabbat at
Ruach House ends with Rabbi Granatstein making Havdallah there. |
